What is Screen Resolution?
Screen Resolution refers to the number of pixels horizontally and vertically. Higher the resolution will result in sharper and clearer display. For example, a 1920 x 1080 resolution means 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically.
Pixel density is the measure of number of
pixels per inch. For convenience, short term “ppi” (pixel per inch) is used for
pixel density. Again, higher the number of pixels per inch will result in sharper
display depending on the screen size. For instance, images will appear more sharp on a smaller display as compared to a larger display of the same pixel density.
Screen Resolutions with reference to their names:
You all must have observed that often on mobile
phone manufacturer’s official website, they haven't mentioned the resolution of
the display of a smartphone. Rather they have written like "FHD" or a
"WVGA" display. Some people get confused about it (including myself a
while ago). These are in fact the names of the display resolution. Below are
discussed the names of resolution:
- QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics Array): 320 x 240
- VGA (Video Graphics Array): 640 x 480
- WVGA (Wide Video Graphics Array): 800 x 480
- SVGA (Super Video Graphics Array): 800 x 600
- FHD (Full High Definition): 1920 x 1080
- QHD (Quad High Definition): 2560 x 1440
- UHD or 4K (Ultra High Definition): 3840 x 2160
